Nitrogen makes up about 80% of the atmospheric air, but it is not in a form usable by plants. The bacterium Beijerinckia fluminensis fixes molecular nitrogen and, through a series of transformations, converts it into ammonium and nitrate forms that can be easily absorbed by plants. It also increases the efficiency of chemical or organic fertilizers used by enhancing their uptake by the plant.
